At Beyond Medicine, acupuncture is routinely practised by Dr. Winnie Tiao. She holds a doctorate (O.M.D) in Oriental Medicine, is a California licensed acupuncturist and she is also a diplomat with The NCCAOM (National Commission of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine). She does acupuncture and cupping. Tui-Na or manipulative therapy is practised by Dr. Frederick Lee. Dr. Lee specialises in nutritional cancer and is also an associate doctor with The Fuda Cancer Hospital in Guangzhou, China.

In most countries of the World, acupuncture is considered as an alternative medicine. It is still a relatively new therapy in many countries but it has been practised for more than 5,000 years in China. The first record of Acupuncture is found in the 4,700 year old “Huang Di Nei Ching” (Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine). It is said to be the oldest medical textbook in the World.

There is an “energy force” known as Qi, pronounced as “Chee” running throughout the body. The Qi consists of all essential life activities which include the spiritual, emotional, mental and the physical aspects of life. A person’s health is influenced by the flow of Qi in the body, in combination with the universal forces of Yin and Yang (“female” and “male” energies). If the flow of Qi is insufficient, , unbalanced or interrupted, Yin and Yang become unbalanced and illness may follow. . Qi travels alongside the “meridians” or special pathways. The meridians or channels are the same on both sides of the body and they are paired. There are fourteen meridians running vertically up and down the surface of the body. Out of these, there are twelve organs meridians in each half of the body (bear in mind that they are paired). There are also two unpaired midline meridians. There are various acupuncture points for treating diseases of the meridians. The acupuncture points are specific locations where the meridians come to the surface of the skin and are easily accessible by acupuncture (needling), moxibustion and acupressure. Energy flows up and down these pathways (meridians) . When the pathways become obstructed, deficient, excessive or even unbalanced, Yin and Yang are said to be out of balance and illness occurs. Acupuncture is said to restore the balance.

How Does Acupuncture Work?:

  • By some unknown process, Acupuncture raises levels of triglycerides, specific hormones, prostaglandins, white blood counts, gamma globulins, opsonins and overall anti-body levels. This is called the “Augmentation of Immunity” Theory.

  • The “Endorphin” Theory states that Acupuncture stimulates the secretions of endorphins in the body.

  • The “Neurotransmitter” Theory states that certain neurotransmitter” levels such as Serotonin and Noradrenalin are affected by Acupuncture.

  • Acupuncture has the effect of either constricting or dilating blood vessels. This may be caused by the body’s release of Vasodilators such as histamine in response to acupuncture.

Many diseases can be successfully treated by acupuncture or its related therapies. The most common ailments include back pain, cervical spondylosis, arthritic conditions, headaches of most kinds. Acupuncture can rid the body of most physical dependency but cannot rid the mind of any bad habits (psychological dependency)

To conclude, we believe that acupuncture is an effective therapy if administered by a well qualified and experienced practitioner. At Beyond Medicine, we resort to a magnitude of therapies. To start, we endeavour our utmost best to pin point the root cause of the problem by giving the patient a thorough bodily examination.

Nutritional therapy to arrest the degenerative process in the body and to provide the body with sufficient nutrients constitute an essential integral part of the total healing process.
